Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit next week is likely to see investors from the West Asian nation committing investments in manufacturing in India amid the Narendra Modi-government pressing them to increase their Indian component of manufacturing to 60 per cent instead of the mandatory (offset clause) 30 per cent.
Israeli ambassador to India Daniel Carmon has termed it a historic visit, which will strengthen the growing partnership between the two countries.
Last month, India raised many eyebrows at home when it voted for an Arab resolution criticising Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The deal is now being reworked as a "government-to-government" contract, so that India purchases the missiles from the Israeli state rather than from a company based in Israel, he said. The deal to procure 8,000 missiles was recently called off. In February 2014, India and Israel signed three important agreements on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, Cooperation in Homeland Security, and Protection of Classified Material. In 1962, Israel helped India when the later asked for arms and ammunition supply.
Nevertheless, India will try to maintain a balance in its dealings with Israel and Palestine. "During their telephone conversation, the two leaders agreed to hold a meeting soon", he added.
In 1992, diplomatic ties between India and Israel were established. In 2003, Ariel Sharon became the first Israeli PM to visit India. Hence, there is no way India can countenance Israel's unilateral actions in the occupied territories without seriously compromising its own claims. In 2014, Modi met Netanyahu on the sidelines of the UNGA, first such meeting in over a decade. Over time, he continued, he is expecting a change in India's voting on issues relating to Israel at worldwide forums.More news: Israel detained 3617 Palestinians in 2017
"We always want all the worldwide community to vote with us, we are not very happy when some in the global community do not", Carmon said.
The visit begins in New Delhi where Netanyahu will have dinner with Modi and meet Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj.
A media highlight of that visit was a barefoot stroll though the surf together at an Israeli beach, where Modi got a demonstration of a mobile water desalination unit mounted on a dune buggy.
Also, stronger ties are expected in the area of agriculture. "We want to take it to a higher level", Bhaskar had said. The Indian market is more important for Israel since the United States stopped Israel from selling high technology defence products to China.
"It's no secret that the two leaders enjoy very clear chemistry, good and intimate relations", Cohen said. The prime minister went on to say, "I don't think the vote materially changes the recent flowering of relations between Israel and India, and everybody can see that".
