Mourinho attacks Scholes: The only thing Scholes does is criticize

Maybe it's fatigue with all the games we've played, maybe it's a lack of concentration - but certainly it will not go without me dealing with those sort of situations when I get the opportunity to do so.

Fierce defences of his players have always been as staple in Mourinho's time-honoured principles as setting up robust defences, both of which finally returned at Goodison yesterday.

Was Mourinho right to respond to Scholes' comments or is this a further example of some people's opinions that the United boss is in the midst of a meltdown which will ultimately lead to his inevitable departure from the club? The Oasis star and City fan publicly labelled Mourinho "the most hated man in football" days later.

Turning specifically to Scholes' criticism of Pogba, he added: "I think the only thing Paul Scholes does is criticise". He has been stressing on the fact that the club has spent money on important players like Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku but nothing like the amount on a collective level like City. I think Scholes will be in the history books as a phenomenal player, but not as a pundit'.

Pogba's influential display came after comments from ex-United midfielder Scholes last week in a home draw with Southampton in which he questioned the £89 million man's work-rate and attitude. "It's not Scholes' fault either, it's just the way football is".

Lukaku isn't the only player United have capable of leading the line and Martial needs to prove that consistently so Mourinho can utilise his options more effectively in the remaining months of the season, allowing the Belgian to rediscover his earlier form when he was fresher. So 25 is around six trophies.

He's one of the few in United's squad who have impressed, and at such a young age he is definitely an asset to the club. Defensively we were very good, a very good team performance today. "If he's 25 per cent as successful, he'll be quite happy".

The legendary Englishman has indeed criticised the club heavily since turning into a pundit and some speculate it's due to him wanting Ryan Giggs to become the next manager.

Giggs was an assistant to previous United manager Louis Van Gaal.

Both sides struggled to create first-half chances in the wet and windy conditions although United finished the opening period stronger and seized the momentum after the break, with Juan Mata hitting the post before Martial set them on the way to victory.
