The contest was unique in that half the contestants, Mitchell and Smith, were rookies.
Although this year's rookie class is star-studded, two names keep popping up when the Rookie of the Year award is mentioned: Donovan Mitchell and Ben Simmons. "He's my Rookie of the Year right now". Nance looked like he had the better dunk by throwing it off the backboard, catching it then tapping it off the glass before he dunked it.
"I'm focused on my team making the playoffs, so all the other accolades and awards, they'll come in time if I'm doing my job", Simmons said.
Simmons will be in the world team for the Rising Stars game featuring other rookie and second-year players.
If there's any consolation for Nance, he gets to play with LeBron James.More news: European Union divided over western Balkans expansion
"I'm not concerned about that", Simmons said.
The Philadelphia star has his sights set on playing in the NBA All-Star game soon, not just being the best rookie.
He was snubbed despite earning the third most fan votes among Eastern Conference guards, but he understands rookies, including James, were also snubbed during their first year in the National Basketball Association.
On the season, Mitchell, who was selected 13 overall in last year's NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets before being traded to the Jazz, is mustering 19.6 points on 43.9 percent shooting from the floor, 3.5 rebounds, and 3,5 assists per game.
Suffice it to say he made the most of his opportunity.
