However, Speaker Rajendra Trivedi, who suspended the opposition MLAs in the first half, revoked the suspension in the second half after the Congress' chief whip, Amit Chavda, tendered an apology on behalf of his party colleagues. Tempers flared quickly but just when it appeared that it would remain a verbal confrontation, a Congress MLA - Pratap Dudhat and BJP's Jagdish Paanchal got engaged in a fist fight. They were eventually taken out by marshals. The Speaker immediately announced Dudhat's suspension.
Dudhat's action created a furore in the House, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House. The other BJP members present in the House came to Panchal's rescue and attacked Der. Der was later escorted out of the House. The speaker adjourned the house for ten minutes, named Dudhat for five years term suspension and left but the effect did not stop there.
Deputy Chief Minister Patel said the incident was shameful. His proposal was supported by senior minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama. "I do not even know what I was being suspended for", he said. Luckily, Panchal was not hurt in the attack.
Later, speaking to media persons, Dudhat alleged that he was being targetted by the treasury benches and abuses were being hurled at him for over a week.More news: Hamas starts probe into bombing attack on Palestinian PM's convoy
Speaker suspended Pratap Dudhat and Amrish Der for three years and Baldev Thakore for a year following acrimonious scenes in the state assembly.
"The Speaker can check the recording of the House proceedings".
The Congress members will demand the resignations of all the defected MLAs as well, so that they could go to the people to seek fresh mandate.
Speaker Rajendra Trivedi strongly reprimanded the legislators, calling their act hooliganism, and said the stiff punishment was aimed at setting a deterrent to such behaviour. It was passed by a majority vote, following which Congress members staged a walkout. He objected that the leader of the opposition should understand the limitations of time for a question. For the last six to seven days, BJP MLA Jagdish Panchal has been uttering bad words and using foul language against me in the House.
