Donald Trump dumps Rex Tillerson as secretary of state

President Trump is saying the opposite.

Tillerson's departure capped months of friction between the Republican president and the 65-year-old former Exxon Mobil chief executive, who had no diplomatic or political experience before becoming secretary of state. Corker, one of Tillerson's closest allies on the Hill, also gave well wishes to the outgoing secretary of state.

Mr Tillerson also appeared out of the loop last week when Mr Trump announced he would meet with North Korea's leader and become the first sitting United States president to do so.

He tried to salvage the Iran nuclear deal through a European-brokered fix to the Obama-era agreement, rather than having Trump scuttle the deal completely. And he felt a little bit differently. "So we were not thinking the same".

"This is a level of discussion, this president is going to drive this effort, this negotiation, but it will take a team to build out the picture, so that we put the president in the best position so that he can achieve that outcome", Pompeo said on Sunday. Instead he made it to March, but it was clear that this was a move some time in the making, given that Mr Trump already had successor Mike Pompeo lined up to take over the reins. Golstein said that Tillerson had "every intention of staying". The move comes after the secretary of State asserted Monday night that Russian Federation "clearly" was responsible for the poisoning of a former British spy, a statement that went well beyond comments from the White House.

A senior White House official said Mr Trump asked Tillerson to step down on Friday but did not want to make it public while he was on a trip to Africa.

But Trump fired him even as he was returning to the capital, and Tillerson reportedly learned of it from Twitter, where the President announced his successor. Last summer as tensions rose when Kim Jong Un and Trump traded insults, Tillerson said the US wanted to "resolve this through talks", rather than the military options the White House said were on the table.

"Mike Pompeo, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will become our new Secretary of State", Trump tweeted. Trump tweeted, "He will do a fantastic job!" Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! If confirmed, she would become the CIA's first female director.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), chair of the Senate foreign relations committee, said in a statement that he spoke with Pompeo by phone on Monday morning.

Stephen Bannon Trump's chief strategist, who had been a driving force behind the president's anti-globalization and pro-nationalist agenda that helped propel him to election victory, was sacked by Trump in mid-August.

Anthony Scaramucci The White House communications director was sacked by Trump in July after just 10 days on the job, following profanity-laced comments to The New Yorker magazine.

Mr Trump publicly undercut Mr Tillerson's diplomatic initiatives numerous times and Mr Tillerson appeared out of the loop this month when Mr Trump announced plans to meet with North Korea's Kim. The sensitive diplomacy would be the first face-to-face meeting between the leaders of the USA and North Korea, which claims to have missiles capable of striking anywhere in the mainland U.S.

Rob Porter The White House staff secretary, a senior adviser in charge of much of the documentation that went to Trump for his signature, resigned in early February following accusations of domestic abuse from two former wives.
