Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb and Egypt's Grand Mufti Shawki Allam denounced the vehicle bomb attack that killed two policemen in the coastal city of Alexandria on Saturday, while calling on Egyptians to stand by state institutions and participate in the presidential elections that will begin on Monday. Two policemen were killed.
"The interior ministry has dealt an effective blow to the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood. and exchanged fire with its elements, which led to the killing of six", the statement said.
The explosion killed a policeman and another person and wounded four other police officers, according to the state news agency MENA. Police accuse Hasam of being an armed branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, banned after the army ousted president Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood member, in 2013.
The Hasam Movement has taken responsibility for several attacks targetting Egyptian security forces around Cairo over the past year.
Egypt on Monday begins three days of voting in a presidential election which President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is widely expected to win.
