Karti's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom. Also, the Court directed the police to ensure that Karti gets adequate security inside the jail. After being grilled in police custody during the last few days, the CBI on Monday produced Karti in a Delhi court after his three-day police custody in the INX Media corruption case expired.
News18 reported that Karti's counsel Dayan Krishan moved an application in a Delhi court seeking a separate jail cell, and stated that since P Chidambaram had taken charge as a home minister "just after 26/11 Mumbai attacks and had several accused under MCOCA prosecuted, there is an indisputable threat to his life at Tihar jail". "Some of the accused related to those cases are lodged in Tihar so I apprehend a great threat to my security", he said.
The court, which refused Karti's plea for a separate cell in the jail in view of threat perception as during his father's tenure as Union Home Minister several terrorists were kept in Tihar jail, said the social status of the Chidambaram family can not be ignored but he can not be treated differently from the other accused persons.
The judge, however, did not find reason to grant his plea for a separate cell, saying Karti can not be treated differently from the other accused just because of his and his father's social status. "He [Karti Chidambaram] can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison", the court said. The court is likely to hear the CBI matter on March 19. The court dismissed Karti's plea for early hearing of his bail application.More news: Australia under the pump as Usman Khawaja falls late on day three
The court is also likely to pronounce order on Bhaskararaman's bail plea in the ED case on Tuesday. He has been in CBI custody for questioning since his arrest from Chennai Airport on February 28.
Karti, son of former union minister P Chidambaram, is accused of accepting money from INX Media in 2007 and 2008 in exchange for facilitating foreign investment approvals for the INX Media group, using the influence of his father, who was then Union finance minister.
As per reports, the CBI had initially alleged that Karti received Rs 10 lakh as bribe for the FIPB clearance.
