Police name person of interest in Binghamton student's homicide

Man arrested in connection with SUNY Binghamton student's death

Suspect in Haley Anderson homicide apprehended, Nicaraguan news reports say

Following the murder of a 22-year-old Binghamton University student, domestic violence advocates are speaking out in an effort to prevent future tragedies.

Orlando Tercero, 22, was wanted by authorities in Broome County in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend Haley Anderson, 22, a senior nursing student.

Nicaraguan authorities told WABC-TV that Tercero had been detained and transferred to a prison in El Chipote, 40 miles southwest of the capitol, Managua.

Additional details were not immediately available and the Binghamton Police Department declined to comment. Police suggested in an earlier statement that Tercero and Anderson may have been romantically linked. He is a USA citizen.

Binghamton police officers responded to Haley Anderson's off-campus home on Oak Street, where she was found dead shortly before 1 p.m. Friday, authorities said. Anderson did not reside in the house.

Tercero is a United States citizen and was also studying nursing.

"This incident and the circumstances of the death [were] not a random act or involving the conduct of a stranger", the statement read.

According to local shelter, Rise, the period of time when a victim tries to leave a relationship is often the most unsafe.

Diaz did not say whether Tercero was being represented by a lawyer in Nicaragua.

"Every day, we work to protect Broome County residents, and those living in our community", Cornwell wrote. Anderson, a nursing student at the State University of NY at Binghamton, was from Westbury, Long Island.
