Tillerson retired as CEO of ExxonMobil to take the job of secretary of state.

Now he's fired the secretary of state in favor of CIA Director Mike Pompeo, opting for someone who's more in tune with Trump's world view. That's according to current and former US intelligence officials, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the issue.

During his farewell address, Tillerson confirmed reports that he didn't receive a call from Trump until around noon - more than three hours after news broke that he had been replaced.

"And we commenced the steps to dramatically increase not just the scope, but the effectiveness of the sanctions" he said.

Regarding Pompeo, who served in the House from 2011-2017, Graham said he's a ideal pick to lead the State Department. We've got a long actually quite well but we disagreed on things. "When you look at the Iran deal. He's a good man".

"Over the past year I've had issues with how Secretary Tillerson has handled Russian Federation and managed the State Department", Sen. Others include strategist Steve Bannon, national security adviser Michael Flynn, FBI Director James Comey, White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, health secretary Tom Price, communications directors Hope Hicks and Anthony Scaramucci, economic adviser Gary Cohn and press secretary Sean Spicer. "He will miss his colleagues at the Department of State and enjoyed working together with the Department of Defense in an uncommonly robust relationship", Goldstein added.

The president, speaking briefly to reporters yesterday about his decision to fire Tillerson, made his reasoning clear: He wanted someone who would agree with him.

No reason was given for the decision, but earlier Goldstein - who was undersecretary for public affairs and public diplomacy - had told reporters that Tillerson was not expecting to be ousted.

A Tillerson spokesman said the secretary of state found out about his ouster after Trump tweeted about it Tuesday morning, although the White House insisted that Tillerson was made aware that his days were numbered on Friday.

As a result, he said he "was up most of that night". The United States needs more from the relationship between its president and secretary of state.

Tuesday morning, Trump told reporters: "It sounds to me like it would be Russian Federation based on all the evidence they have" regarding the poisoning.

"I will now return to private life, private citizen, a proud American, proud of the opportunity I've had to serve my country", Tillerson said during a briefing Tuesday afternoon.

Tillerson's departure capped months of friction between the Republican president and the 65-year-old former Exxon Mobil chief executive.
