Shortly after becoming president a year ago Trump had considered Perry for the veterans affairs secretary job.

President Trump is considering replacing embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin with Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

In the midst of the controversies, Shulkin has complained that he is the victim of "subversion" from within the VA and at the White House organized by Trump administration political appointees who see him as an obstacle to expansion of the choice program allowing veterans to opt for private health care.

Trump surprised Shulkin by dialing in Fox & Friends host Pete Hegseth on speaker phone to get his opinion of the legislation, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversation... Early on Tuesday, Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson after a series of rifts over policy on North Korea, Russia and Iran.

The dispute spilled into public over the last month, following a scathing report by department's inspector general on a business trip that Dr. Shulkin took to Britain and Denmark previous year.

Shulkin's standing in the administration has been shaky for weeks now as his agency devolves into turmoil, and though White House press secretary Sarah Sanders maintained just last week that he has done "a great job", Trump now wants him out. The report brought Shulkin's foes into the open, where they have demanded his firing; last month, The Washington Post reported that, in mid-February, one of Shulkin's senior aides directly lobbied Republican staffers in Congress to demand the resignation of Shulkin and his deputy secretary, Thomas Bowman, an effort that they rebuffed.

But top White House officials have only become more irked with the secretary's penchant for publicly discussing internal politics, and Mr. Trump has begun searching for a replacement.

Trump raised the idea with Perry on Monday, according to a number of news outlets that cited unidentified White House officials, but has not offered him the job so far.
