Wrinkle in Time a big leap for teen star

Ryan Coogler published a lovely ode to Ava DuVernay on Friday, the nationwide opening of her Disney film A Wrinkle In Time. With the influx of darker, bleaker blockbuster films doing their best to be as dark and dreary as possible, "A Wrinkle in Time", even with its gaudiness, is a joy to look at.

Unfold your love (or hate) for all things "A Wrinkle in Time" in the comments.

DuVernay shoots for the stars with a highly stylized look and energy to the film that's both visionary and referential. In the film, there's a black cloud that seems to be alive and spreading, but it's not named. The most interesting aspects of the universe DuVernay has summoned into three dimensions - especially anything pertaining to the IT - is given only momentary attention; the film's more intent on allowing Witherspoon, Kaling and Winfrey to mug to the cameras. Either way, it's too early to call A Wrinkle in Time a loss, and it's still an impressive achievement as the first $100+ million-budgeted feature to be directed by a woman of color.

Assuming A Wrinkle in Time can hit these projections over the next couple days, while it won't go down as one of Disney's best spring performers, it also won't be considered a disappointment on the commercial side of things.

Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is a young teenage girl who faces a lot of struggle in her life. Who (Mindy Kaling), only speaks in famous quotes, citing legends like Gandhi as well as poets and rappers. I make films to express myself. Be uniquely you, take a child to see A Wrinkle in time when it opens in theaters nationwide on March 9th to tap into YOUR inner child. "It was an honor to let them know...to let Chadwick [Boseman] know and Lupita [Nyong'o] know just how wonderful that film is and what it means to us". "Through that, I have confidence that there are people out there...interested in looking in through the window of the world of my story, in the same way that I enjoy watching films by filmmakers of all kinds..." Pine is wonderful as the reckless but inspirational dad Dr. Murry, and McCabe is a breakout star, stealing the film from his co-stars as the odd little brother.

A total of 37 per cent of audiences gave Wrinkle an "excellent" rating with another 38 per cent rating it "very good", according to comScore/Screen Engine PostTrak. Because for all its clumsiness, the mere miracle that Wrinkle in Time exists should never be forgotten. Some performances, however, do fall a bit flat, with supporting turns from Zach Galifianakis and Chris Pine falling short in the long run, while stronger supporting roles, like Michael Peña's, not receiving enough time to flesh it out. She was good when she was there, but her character is sidelined for most of the film.

DuVernay's update of Madeleine L'Engle's classic book was hotly anticipated. This is what happened to Charles Wallace who is adopted in the film versus being the biological child of the Murrys in the book.

If you need us, we will be sobbing over this handsome friendship.

She said people keep telling her how much she's going to change with her new raised profile.

We shouldn't be too anxious about Sandy and Dennys missing from the A Wrinkle in Time movie. DuVernay trailed off, then found her voice.

"I saw some of the cast from Black Panther, which made me really excited..."

The movie starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Minday Kaling, Chris Pine and newcomer Storm Reid grossed another $6.3 million overseas in six territories, so it still has a lot of room to grow its worldwide audience.
