Somerhalder will star as Dr. Luther Swann, who gets caught up in a world of mystery and horror when his best friend, Michael Fayne, is transformed into a deadly predator after contracting an unknown disease. The latest offering from the streaming service will be based on IDW's comic book series of the same name written by best-selling author Jonathan Maberry.
Ian Somerhalder, who played one of the hottest vampires on TV in The Vampire Diaries, is returning to the small screen in another series about the bloodthirsty creatures. Like V-Wars, Locke & Key is based on an IDW comic series (by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez) and is now being shopped around. The mysterious illness transforms Michael and begins to spread, splitting society up into factions as uninfected people begin to fight back against the new vampire threat.

Although he's playing a mere mortal in V-Wars, Somerhalder will be tapping into his genre expertise to direct select episodes of the 10-episode first season. William Laurin and Glenn Davis have been tapped as showrunners. High Park's Eric Birnberg and Thomas Walden will executive produce alongside IDW Entertainment president David Ozer, IDW CEO Ted Adams and Marada Pictures' Games Gibb. Television with actress Nikki Reed, his wife, via their Rare Bird Productions banner.
There is now no expected release date for V-Wars, but it's highly likely that Netflix will release the entire first season at once, as the company does with most of its original programming. He previously starred in The CW's series adaptation of "The Vampire Diaries" as Damon Salvatore.
