Kathua rape case: Mufti accepts resignations of BJP ministers

Talking about the resignation of the two BJP ministers - Lal Singh and C P Ganga - he said people would have welcomed them had they resigned immediately after their assurance of CBI probe was rejected by the chief minister.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday forwarded the resignations of two BJP ministers - who had participated in a rally supporting people arrested for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua - to the State Governor N N Vohra for acceptance. Victim's mother has also alleged in the FIR filed in this case that Shashi singh was present at the spot when the incident happened.

"They were asked to resign when there was media outrage against the party, otherwise they have not said anything which was not in line with the position of the party - which is that the murderers should be hanged", Ashok Kaul, J&K general secretary of the BJP, told Kashmir Reader. Her strong views and attitude to take on any leader in the party is said to be worrying many. Already, PDP minister and brother of Mehbooba Mufti has said that the people of Kashmir have a perception that the PDP is a partner in crime in the killings of innocent people at gunfight sites.

Reports inform KNS that the Chief Minister has on Sunday dispatched the resignation letters of Forest Minister Lal Singh and Industries Minister CP Ganga to Raj Bhavan for information.

The PDP thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and Ram Madhav for helping resolve the issue.

Police only brought a case against the powerful politician last week after the young victim attempted to burn herself alive outside the state leader's residence. A week later, her body was found in woods near her village.

He said a perception was created by the opposition, particularly Congress, that the two BJP leaders were "pro-rapists" and were trying to hamper the investigation. Madhav accused the Congress party of playing double standards. Earlier in the day, the Allahabad high court passed an order saying that the CBI should arrest the MLA and not just detain him and the probe agency should consider filing of an application for cancellation of bail granted to other accused in the case.

She was produced in local CBI court in the evening today.
