Mets rookie manager Mickey Callaway faced second-guessing after Jay Bruce pinch hit for rookie catcher Tomas Nido and was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Syndergaard followed with an infield popup on the first pitch.

Paul Sewald replaced Harvey and was effective, pitching three hitless innings and striking out five.

Jesus Aguilar singled with one out in the sixth, and Robert Gsellman relieved. The Mets scored what proved to be the decisive runs in the fifth, when Jay Bruce delivered an RBI double and Adrian Gonzalez lofted a sacrifice fly before Bruce raced home on a wild pitch to give NY a 6-2 lead.

Over his career Adrian Gonzalez has hit 8-22 with a home run against Jhoulys Chacin. Rosario snagged the ball with a dive onto the outfield grass and barely threw out the slow-running pitcher at first.

Martinez (2-1) allowed two hits and four walks while helping send the Reds to their eighth consecutive loss, one short of matching their longest losing streak of last season.
