Denzel Washington's son John David Washington plays Ron Stallworth, the first African-American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The US release date of 10 August also coincides with the beginning of James Fields Jr's trial, the man Lee refers to as "the motherfucker psychopath who plows his auto down through a crowded street and killed Heather Heyer". Or, in Lee parlance: "Dis joint is based upon some fo' real fo' real shit".More news: Ayatollah claims Trump chided Middle East leaders before pulling out of deal

He arrived at the Monday night premiere wearing two knuckle rings, one of which read "love" and the other "hate", along with a pair of Nike shoes - one white, one back - that featured the name of the film on the side of each.
Though the film has already released at Cannes, this pitch-perfect trailer is the closest audiences will get to BlacKkKlansman before its theatrical release on August 10.
