The improbable marriage of Vegas and hockey reached the NHL's biggest stage Monday night, starting with one of the Golden Knights' patented pregame shows and ending with their 6-4 win over the Capitals. The Golden Knights, resilient as ever, knotted the game at two goals apiece on William Karlsson's goal just before the first intermission.

Game two also takes place in Las Vegas, on Wednesday at 20:00 local time (Thursday, 04:00 BST). Back on May 1, with Vegas leading its second-round series against the Sharks two-games-to-one and the Capitals and Penguins even at one game apiece, Harper tweeted, "Could you imagine a Golden Knights vs. Capitals Stanley Cup?"

Kelly Kisio, a longtime executive for the WHL's Calgary Hitmen and now a professional scout for the Vegas Golden Knights, sometimes needs the distraction.

Sports Washington delves into some of the Capitals' specific defensive issues, but to keep it simple, Holtby can only do so much when players like Reilly Smith receive chances like these.

The Vegas Golden Knights have embraced the roots of their city and opened every game of their inaugural season with an incredible opening ceremony that has a very Vegas-y feel. "But after we took the team, it's all (head coach) Gerard (Gallant) and his coaching staff and the players". Who saw that coming? Generally speaking, both teams were fairly sloppy, which contributed to the 10-goal output.

Both coaches will get more familiar with each team as this series goes along, from additional video of their opponents' structure to a deeper understanding of which matchups to exploit and which ones to avoid.

"I think he might has been a little surprised by it", said Wilson, who was suspended for three games in the second round for a hit against Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese.

Beyond those tweaks, it's simply likely that Fleury and Holtby will flat-out play better. But I was born and raised in Las Vegas, and I support the Golden Knights.

"For our group, it's not good enough", Marchessault said.

The Nationals have a day game in Baltimore on Monday, so Harper will be able to watch Game 1.

"We feed off the energy, we have been feeding off the energy all year", said Reaves.

Washington went ahead just 42 seconds later when Backstrom, who suffered a hand injury in the second round that forced him to miss four games, scored his fifth. "I expect us to have a response".
