Early Thursday, Trump personally welcomed three freed Americans returning home from North Korea, declaring, "We're starting off on a new footing" with Pyongyang.

"We had good conversations, conversations that involve deep complex problems, challenges, strategic decisions that chairman Kim has before him", Pompeo said.

Singapore also has a track record for hosting global summits.

It Trump and Kim have interest in creating powerful optics - and both seem to be personalities who would - the Vegas-style Marina Bay Sands hotel and casino, which towers over Singapore's bustling financial district, could be the ideal venue.

Seoul's Unification Ministry said Tuesday that the meeting will discuss ways to carry out peace commitments made during the inter-Korean summit. "Right now, we are still planning out a lot more of the details".

The tweet of the United States president regarding the meeting caught aides off guard. We have a month and several days. The majority of people in North Korea live in poverty.

Singapore is an ideal site for the summit because Singapore historically has been an honest broker between East and West. Singapore has been a great friend to the USA but also Singapore has carefully worked to be a friend to all, which has earned it trust in capitals around the world. The site has been used for each of North Korea's six underground nuclear test explosions.

Singapore has pushed itself as a neutral actor in global affairs.

In 2015, the city-state played host to a historic meeting between China's president Xi Jinping and then Taiwanese president Ma Ying Jeou. Singapore has the advantage of being a relatively short plane ride from North Korea, while still being a gleaming, hyper-modern metropolis that offers top-class facilities.

"I don't want to offer hypotheticals".

"I've been on the job about five weeks", Bolton said.

Pompeo said there would need to be "complete" and "verifiable" denuclearization, suggesting it would involve inspections to ensure the North's compliance.

"I am not going to get ahead of the negotiations, but that is our... stated goal. We know who we are dealing with here", said Victoria Coates, of the National Security Council.

Amid concerns that North Korea will demand the U.S. withdraw its troops from neighboring South Korea, Kang emphasized that the U.S. military presence there must be "a matter for the U.S. -ROK alliance first and foremost", using an acronym for South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea. That means Trump's stewardship of the nuclear crisis is now far more popular than the President himself, the network said.

The White House says the president spoke Friday by phone with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and thanked him for his willingness to host the June 12 meeting. In a Twitter reply to Mr Trump, he added: "May it lead to a successful outcome".

Analysts were sanguine about the choice of Singapore. It has developed into one of Asia's most affluent nations.

The comments from Bolton and Pompeo come as Trump prepares to meet with Kim in June.

In a meeting this week attended also by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, Moon and Chinese envoy Li Keqiang issued a statement demanding that "the worldwide community, including the United States, must actively take part in ensuring a bright future for North Korea through a security guarantee and support for its economic development".
