37 Palestinian Protesters Die, Gaza Officials Say, As US Opens Jerusalem Embassy

The dead included eight children under the age of 16, according to Palestinian sources.

At the same time in Gaza, at least 41 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire during clashes near the fence separating the besieged Palestinian enclave and Israel.

At least 43 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during clashes at the Gaza border Monday in the deadliest day there since the 2014 war, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced.

The US on Monday blocked a Kuwait-drafted UN Security Council statement that would have expressed "outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians" and called for an independent investigation, UN diplomats said.

The US move fulfilled a pledge by President Donald Trump, who has recognised the holy city as the Israeli capital, but it has fired Palestinian anger and drawn criticism from many foreign governments as a set back to peace efforts.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said more than 1,600 had suffered injuries, and that numerous dead had not yet been identified.

President Tayyip Erdogan described the actions of the Israeli forces as a "genocide" and Israel as a "terrorist state".

The protests mark the culmination of a campaign led by Hamas to break the blockade of the territory imposed by Israel and Egypt since 2007. The family of Leyla Ghaben initially said the nine-month-old was killed by tear gas inhalation after ending up near the protests due to a mix-up, but on Tuesday a Palestinian doctor, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Associated Press that the baby girl had preexisting conditions which may have contributed to her death.

"It is imperative that everyone shows the utmost restraint to avoid further loss of life", he tweeted Tuesday. No Israeli casualties have been reported.

The White House, however, blamed the bloodiest day in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in years on Hamas.
