Millions of people control their home entertainment components using Google Assistant and Android TV with their smart TVs to watch television and listento music.
Since then, Google has worked to incorporate the Assistant into more devices to better compete with Amazon's Alexa ecosystem. And it's now working with Dish to integrate the Hopper receivers with the Assistant, so that you can say things like, "Hey Google, switch to AMC" through either your phone or a Google Home device.
"Over the past year, we've made great progress ensuring that the Google Assistant can work with all types of connected devices, and now every major device brand works with the Assistant in the USA", the company said in a blog post. The new, simplified voice commands will let you go directly to your favorite channels, control volume, or pause a show.
The Google Assistant can now connect with more than 5,000 smart home devices, an increase from 1,500 in January, including every major device brand, according to a company announcement. Just how many devices is that?
The company says its Google Assistant is now at work inside a bevy of products, including "cameras, dishwashers, doorbells, dryers, lights, plugs, thermostats, security systems, switches, vacuums, washers, fans, locks, sensors, heaters, AC units, air purifiers, refrigerators, and ovens", among other gadgets.
Google also announced that it plans to fund early-stage startups to advance what digital assistants can do. We recently announced support for IKEA lights and Deutsche Telekom's Magenta hub which enables dozens of devices to be controlled by Google Assistant.
