On the otherside, Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy requested the makers of Rajinikanth's Kaala not to release it in the state in "this kind of atmosphere". Kaala's release seemingly more impacted by politics than even Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavat, that was released after the Supreme Court's directions. "The opening of 'Kaala' may be on the lower side - I haven't found the time to check - because his last film with the same director (Pa. Ranjith) had not been appreciated that much".
"His films are usually sold out from the day the advance bookings open", said Gowthaman, explaining that while Kaala is still doing better than most releases of other Tamil actors, it hasn't matched the high standards set by previous Rajinikanth films. Vishal adds that "Kaala" may well surprise naysayers.
In other parts of the state, cinema hall owners in Mysore, Mandya, Raichur, Belgaum and Chikkaballapura districts did not screen the movie.
However, besides the piracy website, few cases reported where the audience were caught streaming the film live from thratres. "But we hope they have a great story to be shared, which may be liked - and the film does well", he is quoted as saying. The promos of 'Kaala' haven't established a connect with Hindi audiences. They are shutting by themselves and are not screening Kaala. The film will hit the theatres in Karnataka, where pro-Kannada groups have been agitating against it, in protest against the actor-turned-politician's remarks on the Cauvery river water dispute.
Hundreds of activists of pro-Kannada organisations, including the KRV, gathered outside theatres and multiplexes in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru, Ballari and Belagavi to protest against the film's release."Cauvery water is more important than a Rajinikanth film for us". As a result, the Tamil film has taken a good opening in the state.
Joining the celebrations now is Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan.
