The 53-year-old actor took to Instagram on Tuesday to mourn the death of Kate Spade, who was found dead hours earlier in her New York City apartment. Kate Spade's older sister, Reta Saffo, said that she had been trying to convince Kate to get help for several years without success and that Spade had been "self-medicating with alcohol".
"Even though I've never met her, she touched my life", said Kate Spade fan Karen Geraghty.
He said her death was a "complete shock".
In reference to claims Kate had been troubled by recent issues in their relationship, and was "drinking" as a result, Andy explains the couple had been living separately for 10 months but within blocks of one another.
"I, personally - I don't know about Andy - took off a good 9 years raising my daughter, and absolutely adored every moment of it", said Spade. "We were together for 35 years", he said.
The Spades were not legally separated nor discussing divorce, the statement adds, but "simply needed a break".

Spade also referenced media reports of a suicide note that had been reportedly left by his late wife.
"She was the kindest person I've ever known".
Regardless of the reason, Spade's untimely and tragic death is sure to leave an unimaginable imprint on the hearts of many, especially that of her young daughter, Frances. Their friend and colleague, Fern Mallis, spoke to reporters from PEOPLE shortly after the news broke, calling the rumored suicide "so out of character" for Spade.

Andy Spade said he had not yet seen a note left behind by his wife but was "appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media".
"Now would you really go into someone else's office and say, 'Hey, hey, hey, hey, I've got to tell you something?' No, you'd say, 'Call me when you have a second.' So I've had to learn to be as respectful".
Her business would later expand into hundreds of Kate Spade New York stores in North America and in Japan, with her products on shelves in more than 450 stores worldwide.
