The cult of Donald Trump has claimed its next victim. The closest thing to a protest candidate in the race, her candidacy was born of her controversial time spent as the director of the Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation and the Department of Health and Environmental Control. And moderate House Republicans fell short of securing enough support to force votes on sweeping protections for young undocumented immigrants - a measure at odds with Trump's hard-line immigration posture.
"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA", Trump tweeted at around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, just a few hours before polls closed. But no shame, no gain. He returned in 2013 and won a special election to his old U.S. House seat, holding on twice more. And Trump helped him do it. Sanford endorsed Ted Cruz (R-TX) during the 2016 presidential primary. Trump, of course, ignored him.
In the past, Sanford said the president should "just shut up" and "quit responding" to critics and focus on the issues at hand. Mark Meadows, the chair of the Freedom Caucus and a Trump confidante, said in a statement: "Mark Sanford has been a valued member of the Freedom Caucus and certainly has been a thoughtful member of Congress".More news: Boat carrying over 900 migrants docks in Italy
The crowd chanted "Lock her up" and "Build the wall", a throwback to popular chants at Trump's campaign rallies. During a radio debate, she said, "You can't have a seat at the table in the Oval Office, because you have offended the president numerous times".
Arrington also, in a previous Breitbart News radio interview, pledged to join the House Freedom Caucus - a group that now has no women in it but will when she arrives in Congress next year. "Mark Sanford and the career politicians cheated on us", an Arrington commercial declared.
But Trump says Rep. Katie Arrington "was such a good candidate, and Sanford was so bad, I had to give it a shot".
In the end, Sanford lost his seat, but not his honor.

'Great night for Republicans!' tweeted Trump.
