The sequel will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose previous work includes the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie Oblivion.
When Top Gun first came out, Kilmer had only two major film credits under his belt.
"Listen, it's an iconic character that [Cruise] helped create", the film's producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, told ET past year.
The Paramount movie, which hits theaters next summer on July 12, 2019 and is now in production in San Diego, follows fighter pilots who are entangled in a drone-driven airspace which has made their flying obsolete.
