Police officer lauded for saving toddler on Illinois highway (video)

Officer rescues toddler running on side of Illinois highway

A Naperville police officer was caught on camera rescuing a toddler wandering on a busy road. Sergeant Mannino received a lifesaver award from his department.

Sgt. Anthony Mannino was driving on Route 59 when he saw the boy running along the right lane of the highway.

"I have twin boys, and there's not a day that goes by where something bad happens, you always think of your own kids", Mannino said. He then chased the boy down, even as the 1-year-old continued running.

Mannino stopped his squad auto in the right lane, keeping the lane clear of traffic, and then ran up to the child while shouting at him to stop and "come here". At one point in the video, a large truck passes just a few feet from the boy, who appears to veer toward the center lane of traffic.

Mannino alerted dispatch that he caught the boy and would begin the search for his parents, according to the Naperville Sun.

The officer then picked the child up, carrying him out of harm's way.

Authorities say no one was hurt in the incident.

Mannino says the mother showed up moments later and "obviously was very emotional".
