The news was not so good for Nicole Kidman, who was snubbed for her performance in Top of the Lake: China Girl, and Naomi Watts - for roles in Twin Peaks and Gypsy - when nominations were announced on Thursday. Those included a nomination for Peter Dinklage for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

The most star-studded category, as is often the case, was best actor in a limited series or TV movie, where Antonio Banderas, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Legend and Jeff Daniels all picked up nominations.

"Game of Thrones" roared back onto the Emmy battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but facing a formidable opponent in "The Handmaid's Tale, " last year's top drama series.

Furthermore, Survivor host and executive producer Jeff Probst hasn't been nominated for the Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program Emmy since the last time he won; in 2011.

The top comedy nominee is Donald Glover's Atlanta, with 16. The 70th Emmy Awards will telecast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Sunday, September 17 (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) on NBC.

HBO's Game of Thrones is closely followed by dystopian sci-fi series The Handmaid's Tale, which gained 20 nominations and won top drama previous year.

Meanwhile, 2018 freshman series nominees on the comedy side are HBO's "Barry", Netflix's "GLOW", and Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".

Several major stars not normally associated with television got their first Emmy nominations in 2018.

"I feel tremendous gratitude and joy with this nomination" and am "thrilled" for the show's cast and crew, Oh said in a statement. "I think my mother at this moment may actually be satisfied".

If Legend wins, he'll join the rarified club of "EGOT" performers who've won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. NBC's Saturday Night Live, with 21 nominations this year, has now been nominated 252 times in its history, a record for any show.

Other streaming services also received nominations for their originals, including Hulu with 27 nominations, with The Handmaid's Tale defending its Best Drama award this year.
