Hurricane Chris was upgraded to a category two storm on Wednesday morning as it picked up speed in the direction of Atlantic Canada.

"Sometimes there are no systems steering other systems around an advancing tropical storm or hurricane and that allows it to wobble a little bit and that can change the expected track", explained SaltWire Network meteorologist Cindy Day July 10.

Chris was expected to remain well off the USA coast, the NHC said, adding on its current forecast track, the center of Chris will be near southeastern Newfoundland on Thursday night.

Forecasters have warned that Hurricane Chris will finally bring colder air and rain to the United Kingdom, after sweeping across the Atlantic with winds of up to 105mph.

Also, a fire weather watch was issued for parts of central California and western Nevada, where winds could gust 40 to 50 miles per hour near thunderstorms.

Swells generated by Chris are expected to increase and affect portions of the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states during the next few days. If anything, conditions will worsen in the coming days as rip currents become a significant concern. It added that an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the tropical wave on Wednesday, if needed. It was headed northeast at 10 miles per hour (16 kph). And while it is expected to remain well off-shore, risky rip currents are impacting the Jersey Shore and Long Island. Beryl will continue to move northward and then turn on a more northeasterly course later today and Thursday.

It's producing gusty winds and areas of heavy rain over portions of central and eastern Hispaniola, and the adjacent Atlantic and Caribbean waters.
