Although ISIS has claimed Hussain was a follower, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said Wednesday that there is no evidence to support that claim.
Hussain did not have a criminal record and his prior contact with police did not involve a risk to public safety, according to Toronto police spokesman Meaghan Gray. "On behalf of all Toronto residents, I am outraged that someone has unleashed such a bad attack on our city and people innocently enjoying a Sunday evening", said Mayor John Tory in a statement.
Officials did not identify the other fatality, a 10-year-old girl, or name any of the 13 wounded, who included six women and girls, and seven men.
A so-called family statement, that was not written or signed by family members, talked about Hussain suffering his whole life from mental illness, including psychosis. Medications and therapy were unable to treat him.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent his condolences to the victims of the "terrible tragedy" on Sunday, wishing a speedy recovery to those injured. "We will mourn those who were lost for the rest of our lives", Hussain's family said in a statement.
There is not one side, or the other, but a collective Toronto who has every right to know who Hussain was, how did this happen and what was the motivation? It is now illegal to possess an unregistered handgun or any kind of rapid-fire weapon.
