Netflix Introduces ‘Smart Downloads’; Debuting on iOS Later This Year

The Smart Downloads feature will make the process of watching TV shows offline automatic.

As Netflix tells it in their handy video explainer, this takes away the need to keep in mind to download new episodes and delete the old ones.

If you've gotten used to Netflix's download capability since that feature was rolled out in 2016, this is going to be good news.

Smart Downloads is rolling out now for Android users, and will be available soon for those with an iOS powered device.

"Whenever possible, we want Netflix to do the work for you", said Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation at Netflix. After all, you might not want to disconnect from that Wi-Fi network before your next episode is done. Netflix just made it even easier to binge-watch your favorite shows - even when you're not connected to the internet.

Select Smart Downloads appearing on the top. In the "My Downloads" section, users must select Smart Downloads and toggle it on or off. Users will also be able to toggle the feature from the App Settings by tapping the Menu icon and selecting App Settings.

Smart Downloads will only work for TV shows and not for movies, standup specials and other types of content.

New to Netflix this month is the latest season of Orange Is the New Black, a fresh batch of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Somebody Feed Phil: The Second Course, Shameless season 8, and more.
