Mueller's indictment states that later that very night, Russian hackers became much more brazen: they "attempted after hours to spearphish for the first time email accounts at a domain hosted by a third-party provider and used by Clinton's personal office".
Clinton campaign manager John Podesta's emails were also hacked.
"The object of the conspiracy was to hack into the computers of USA persons and entities involved in the 2016 US presidential election, steal documents from those computers, and stage releases of the stolen documents to interfere with the 2016 USA presidential election", the indictment said.
A few hours before the indictments were announced, Trump described the Mueller investigation as a "rigged witch hunt" that is hurting the U.S. relationship with Russian Federation.
On Aug. 15, 2016, the indictment says, Guccifer 2.0 reached out to someone in contact with the Trump campaign and asked the person if they had seen anything "interesting in the docs I posted?"
The GRU is an intelligence agency and part of the Russian military. "We would have a chance to have ... a very good relationship with President Putin".
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Friday that he informed Trump of the indictments earlier in the week.
Trump went after CNN on Saturday morning over its coverage of the new indictments, which Rosenstein announced just days before the president is set to meet Putin in a one-on-one session in Helsinki.

"We have this stupidity going on, pure stupidity, but it makes it very hard to do something with Russian Federation because, anything you do, it's like: "Russia, oh he loves Russia", he said.

Who were the Russians indicted?
The deputy attorney general said all 12 defendants were in the Russian intelligence service, the GRU.
"One unit engaged by stealing information, a different unit by disseminating the information", Rosenstein said.
The names of the accused are Viktor Borisovich Netyksho, Boris Alekseyevich Antonov, Dmitriy Sergeyevich Badin, Ivan Sergeyevich Yermakov, Aleksey Viktorovich Lukashev, Sergey Aleksandrovich Morgachev, Nikolay Yuryevich Kozachek, Pavel Vyacheslavovich Yershov, Artem Andreyevich Malyshev, Aleksandr Vladimirovich Osadchuk, Aleksey Aleksandrovich Potemkin, and Anatoliy Sergeyevich Kovalev.
The indictment includes 11 criminal counts and one forfeiture allegation.
Mueller previously indicted 13 Russians and three companies for allegedly interfering in the presidential vote.
Ahead of Russia's national day on June 12, Pompeo said the United States honors "the citizens of the Russian Federation and their aspirations for the democratic principles of universal freedom, civil liberties, and the rule of law".
Those comments - and another set of remarks Friday in which he again called the Mueller probe a "witch hunt" - came after he'd already been briefed by Rosenstein about the coming indictments.
