Wake Forest basketball coach charged in deadly Queens attack on tourist

Police charged a Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Thursday with assault in connection with an incident Sunday that resulted in the death of a man in NY.

Jones, of Kernersville, North Carolina, turned himself in to police earlier Thursday.

Jones, who is an assistant basketball coach, is accused of punching Sandor Szabo, 35, outside a hotel in Long Island City last weekend, causing Szabo to fall, hit his head on the pavement and lose consciousness, NBC New York reported.

Szabo, of Boca Raton, was hospitalized in critical condition and died two days later, according to his employer in Florida.

Szabo was banging on multiple cars including Jones' prior to the incident, sources said. Jones fled the scene inside a white SUV, according to the police report.

Wake Forest University officials tell WFMY News 2 they will release a statement later this evening.

The investigation is ongoing, and charges against Jones could be upgraded, police said.

In a statement, Wake Forest said the school would comment further once it gathered more information.

Jones is entering his second year on Demon Deacons' coach Danny Manning's staff.

Jones, a Philadelphia native, previously coached at Virginia Commonwealth and Florida Gulf Coast. "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman", his company, What If Media, said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Szabo, who lived in Boca Raton with his brother, always had a bright smile and shared a love of fishing, cooking and family, the company said.

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post continued. "We are going to miss him dearly".
