The Minnesota Vikings didn't quite deliver on a summer's worth of hype in Week 1, but the various elements that should make them a contender by season's end were all there.
Despite the win, the Vikings still have plenty to work on before any thoughts of making it to this year's Super Bowl actually start to become realistic. He also recovered a fumble by Alfred Morris at the 2-yard line after Linval Joseph stripped the ball just in front of the goal line in the late in the first half and sacked Garoppolo on a third-down safety blitz late in the fourth quarter.
Despite falling short in the opener against the Minnesota Vikings, there were still a number of positive takeaways for the San Francisco 49ers.
They had success rolling Garoppolo out on misdirection plays, and tight end George Kittle was the biggest beneficiary with five catches for 90 yards.
"He played the way he always does", said cornerback Richard Sherman, who made his 49ers debut.
Cousins went 20 for 36 for 244 yards, targeting Adam Thielen 12 times. Wide open after beating Anthony Barr up the same, Kittle had what would've been a 30-yard completion fall off his fingers at midfield. Running back Robert Smith, one of 28 former players on hand for a halftime introduction, received the loudest ovation.More news: Tampa Bay Lightning GM Steve Yzerman stepping down
Fred Zamberletti, the team's original athletic trainer who died last week at age 86, was honoured with a pregame moment of silence. "You see that he's starting to get scared".
49ers: Goodwin hurt his right quadriceps in the first quarter and didn't return.
Garnett moved into the second level to block and came up limping before going to the ground.
With three backups already on the inactive list, the 49ers lost two right guards to left foot injuries during the game. (Pettis later caught a 22-yard touchdown pass.) In the third quarter, Garçon couldn't hold on as he made a leaping attempt in traffic.
Cousins took a shoulder to the back from 49ers linebacker Elijah Lee as he tumbled to the turf and came up just short, a risky way for a franchise quarterback to try to move the chains, but his determination to experience victory in his Vikings debut on Sunday afternoon was not to be reasoned with. He guided the 49ers to five straight wins to finish 2017 after he arrived in a trade with the Patriots and the team had fallen to 1-10, but the National Football League schedule this year did his streak no favours.
