Apple event expected to reveal 3 new iPhones, changes to Apple Watch

"This is the first ECG product offered over the counter directly to consumers", said COO Jeff Williams, noting the watch also got first-of-its kind FDA clearance. All the updates make it the fastest, biggest, most handsome wearable on the block.

The Apple Watch 4 is coming in four variants: 40mm and 44mm styles, and with or without LTE.

Saying that, many apps used a black background already so it was quite hard to see the border, but with the larger screen you can see so much more information. The peak brightness level of 1000 nits is also being retained. However, it is worth noting that Apple has made the move to more energy-efficient, LTPO OLED screens for the Series 4.

Gottlieb and Shuren pointed to the FDA's digital health action plan unveiled previous year, aimed at streamlining approvals for software posing a lower risk than traditional medical devices. The Series 3 will still come in a 38mm variation, though you won't get the incredible display or heart health features.

Premium options of the Apple Watch Series 4 include Hermes editions with super-fancy leather straps and sophisticated clasps, but you won't find any gold-plated Series 4 models on Apple's web site.

Apple also unveiled another interesting, but completely different safety feature for the Watch Series 4. The device's digital crown on the side has a new haptic feedback feature to make it feel like a better wheel. The Apple Watch Series 4 brings a 50% louder speaker to the table, all while moving it further from the microphone for clearer calls. This will allow for a better cell reception as radio waves can easily pass through it. The base model with Global Positioning System will retail for $399.

Series 4 packs a new optical heart sensor. These not only track your activity more precisely.

Apple Watch Series 4 can detect if you have a low heart rate (which can be a sign of serious health problems), and it can now screen your heart rhythms for AFib.

Apple has added electrodes to the back of the watch to allow users to take an electrocardiogram or ECG. This might suggest that Apple is finally dumping the "Series" naming scheme this year, but we'll know for sure soon enough.

"It is incredible to think that the same Watch you wear every day can now take an ECG", Apple COO Jeff Williams said while unveiling the device. So if you're thinking of getting and Apple Watch, it might be the right time to do so.

Thanks to the larger display, there's a new watch face that features up to eight complications that can be customized.

Even if you're not upgrading your hardware, watchOS 5 will be available beginning September 17. One of the major addition is that all band colors and band styles fit any Apple Watch.

The new Apple Watch will be available in an array of stainless and aluminum options starting at $399 on September 21, with pre-orders beginning Friday.
