'Novak Djokovic a magnificent idol and friend' - Juan Martin Del Potro

Novak Djokovic leads US Open final: LIVE updates as Djokovic battles Juan Martin del Potro

Novak Djokovic Wins the U.S. Open

After the dramatic women's final Saturday involving Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, there was no such controversy Sunday.

Welcome to Flushing Meadows, New York, for 2016's final Grand Slam - the US Open.

Meanwhile as the sport continued to tear itself apart over the Serena Williams sexism row, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) stepped in last night to defend beleaguered umpire Carlos Ramos.

"The WTA supports coaching through its on-court coaching rule but further review is needed". For me, that was always an ultimate challenge: "to play Nadal or Federer anywhere", Djokovic continued.

Djokovic continued a remarkable summer after missing the end of last season with a right elbow injury. Perhaps only Stefanos Tsitsipas can be disappointed, losing to fellow rising star Daniil Medvedev, having arrived on the back of a Masters final in Cincinnati.

From that point a Djokovic victory looked inevitable and, after Del Potro wiped out a final-set break at 3-1 in the following game, the Argentine produced a double fault to give Djokovic another chance for a 5-3 lead. But then he was broken in his next game.

Backed by his singing boys, Del Potro roared back in the set by breaking Djokovic to go back on serve.

Officially, Juan Martin del Potro hit 31 clean winners in Sunday's U.S. Open men's final against Novak Djokovic. He showed off all of his court-covering, foe-frustrating, defense-to-offense skills down the stretch on the way to his third U.S. Open title, claiming the last 16 sets he played.

The Serbian embarked on a five-day hike up Montagne Saeinte-Victoire in the south of France after his French Open exit at the hands of Italian Marco Cecchinato in the quarter-finals.

6-3 victory under the roof at Arthur Ashe stadium - it was raining in NY - pulled him level with Pete Sampras for third on the all-time men's list. While growing up, she had revered Williams. "But also I think we are proud to be close to these legends", said the 29-year-old.

"Are you insane?!" was Osaka's reply.

She posed with her trophy at Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center.

While Djokovic's athleticism graced the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Del Potro was buoyed by the "Delpo, Delpo" chants of his friends who have reverberated the stadium throughout the tournament.

For Del Potro, the good news is he is playing without problems in his wrist and at a level good enough to put him alongside the three all-time greats in the world's top four.

At Wimbledon in 2007, he retired with a back injury in the third set of his semifinal against Nadal.

Vandeweghe, niece of former National Basketball Association star Kiki Vandeweghe, became the 17th American woman in the Open era to win the tournament title. "I can't believe she managed to get all the way up". Barty and Vandeweghe kissed the trophy and won $700,000 for their championship.

Osaka finished the match with a victory of 6-2, 6-4.

Juan Martin del Potro believes Novak Djokovic can end his career as the most successful Grand Slam title victor, surpassing Roger Federer's current mark of 20.

"I will try to keeping (troubling) these guys, playing in the next tournaments, and we'll see".

Djokovic is behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, with the trio occupying the top three spots in the rankings again for the first time in more than three years.
