Lloris now faces the prospect of a lengthy ban and a significant fine based on his earnings at Tottenham.

Lloris is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, having gone from strength to strength over his six-year stint at Tottenham.

The officers who spotted Lloris were in an unmarked auto and pulled him over as part of a routine stop.

According to official court papers, the France star was stopped with 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - more than double the legal limit of 35mg.

He apologised for his actions in a statement on the same day: "I wish to apologise wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my teammates, the manager and all of the supporters".

Lloris, who had been at a restaurant that night, was swerving towards parked cars and had to be helped out of his vehicle.

"Drink-driving is completely unacceptable". I made a mistake.

He featured in Spurs' first game after his initial arrest - a 3-0 victory at Manchester United - but was left out of the squad for the following game against Watford due to injury.

"He knows only too well that it shouldn't happen, but it happened and it's not going to change what I think about him and the Hugo Lloris that I've always known", said Deschamps. "The spectacular fall from grace is not lost on Mr. Lloris".

But Lloris's London club are now left to ponder what to do with their starting keeper after his conviction for a serious driving offence. Spurs are now fifth in the Premier League table.

Lloris signed for Spurs from Lyon in 2012 and has made 209 appearances in the Premier League, keeping 75 clean sheets.
