The Mac mini is back and better than ever

The Mac mini is back, baby. The base model Core i3/8 GB RAM/129 GB PCIe SSD model starts at USA $799, which is a pretty steep price for what is now a pretty basic desktop. Probably the biggest announcement for computer enthusiasts was that of the new Mac Mini, after all it has been quite some time since this range was updated.

The 2018 Mac mini will be powered by a choice of quad-core and 6-core 8th-Generation Intel Core processors, with Turbo Boost clock speeds up to 4.6GHz. The graphics performance has also been boosted and the new Mac mini is 60% more powerful when it comes to graphically-intensive tasks than its predecessor.

Like the rest of Apple's new devices, preorders for Mac mini start today. As for the Apple T2 Security Chip, it features an SSD controller that provides on-the-fly data encryption, and HEVC video transcoding (30 times faster than previous generations), apart from a Secure Enclave that ensures the "software loaded in the boot process is not tampered with". It will go on sale on November 7 - which is the same date the all-new MacBook Air. It also comes with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, an Apple T2 Security Chip and a 10Gb Ethernet option.

All of the new Mac mini models come with Intel UHD Graphics 630, and support up to 3 displays.

The Mac mini 2018 ditches standard hard drives for SSDs, offering up to 2TB of super-fast storage space, which will make opening and editing large files and complex apps faster than ever. Consumers and analysts began to speculate that the product line's days were numbered, but Apple CEO Tim Cook responded to an email from a customer to say, "We do plan for Mac mini to be an important part of our product line going forward" about a year ago.

So, now the minimum configuration features a quad-core 8 Gen Intel Core processor, and that can be paired with up to 64GB of RAM, and 2TB of fast PCIe attached solid state storage. Despite all the hardware that's packed into this enclosure, the external dimensions remain the same as the old Mini.
