BMW is forging ahead with its model offensive in the luxury vehicle segment with the unveiling of an open-top sports auto, which it says blends ultra-sporty driving properties of the 8 Series, with distinctive design elegance.
It has also been revealed that the convertible will be available in similar engine options as the coupe, the new 8 Series Convertible M850i xDrive is the model that is feature in the pictures. The M850i Convertible uses the same 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the new coupe, with 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The BMW 8 Series Convertible was developed in parallel to the BMW 8 Series Coupé, the BMW M8 and the BMW M8 GTE endurance racer. Acceleration from 0 - 100 kmph takes 5.2 seconds and the top speed is limited to 250 kmph.
BMW said the M850i xDrive Convertible will sprint to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds, or about 0.2 seconds slower than the coupe, and both models are said to be capabke of reaching a governed top speed of 155 miles per hour.
Other than the roof, the 8 Series Convertible shares all the components and equipment with the 8 Series Coupe. Meanwhile, the entry-level variant at launch will be the 840d xDrive, powered by a 235kW/680Nm 3.0-litre inline six turbo-diesel.

The 8 Series Convertible comes with a standard wind deflector that can be placed behind the front seats to cut down on wind curling back to the front row of seats. Even more comfort is available from the optional neck warmers and air blowers in the seats. For example, an optional M Carbon Exterior Package uses carbon-fiber reinforced polymer pieces for the air intake bars, exterior mirror caps, and rear diffuser insert.
