Tyson Chandler To Sign With Lakers

Tyson Chandler

Tyson Chandler

He was a one-time defensive player of the year, as well as an All Star during his three impressive years with the Knicks. Over the course of the season, no team has given up more than 71.9 percent shooting in the restricted area. With a slew of talented forwards such as Trevor Ariza, TJ Warren, and Josh Jackson, going smaller makes sense, which left Chandler as the odd man out.

Chandler joins the Lakers center depth chart that has the aforementioned McGee.

As @TheSteinLine reports, center Tyson Chandler is getting a buyout with the Suns and will become a free agent upon clearing waivers.

So there's no question the Lakers could use a rim protector for the minutes McGee is unable to play.

While Chandler has struggled to be on the court in recent years, playing 47 games in games in 2016-17 and 46 games in 2017-18. After signing with the Suns back in the summer of 2015, Chandler never got close to making the playoffs in the desert. The Suns have requested waivers on Chandler.

Might the Lakers have been better off waiting? He's seen minimal time off the bench through seven games this year.

"They can pick up right where they left off... we're picking up from scratch", the three-time National Basketball Association champion told a news conference at the Lakers training facility in El Segundo. Robin Lopez, who's been demoted to third string by the Chicago Bulls, would be an obvious younger candidate, and Dewayne Dedmon of the Atlanta Hawks could be available if the Hawks can't find a trade for him by the deadline.

Adding Chandler is an excellent move for the Lakers at this point in the season. But the Lakers don't need prime Tyson Chandler.

This is a win for both the Lakers and Tyson Chandler.
